New York 2009: Performance, the past and the hoped for future

The Dodge Viper sits in the shadow of the Circuit EV prototype

Out in the middle of the Dodge display here at the Javits center lies the past and future of performance cars. Sitting on the floor is the epitome of old school performance, the Viper SRT-10. With a rip-roaring 8.4-liter V10, the Viper accelerates at a rate few cars on the road today can match. In doing so however, it consumes prodigious amounts of refined petroleum.

Just a few feet away, highlighted on the turntable, was the Dodge Circuit. Based on the Lotus Europa, the battery-powered Circuit is likely to be the first of several electric drive vehicles that Chrysler plans to produce starting in 2010. While it's not quite as fast as the Viper at this point, 0-60 times in the 5-second range are nothing to be embarrassed about. Unlike its long-nosed sibling, the Circuit emits nothing nor does it consume any petroleum products directly. Now if only Chrysler can stay in business long enough..

New York 2009: Chrysler shows off its battery packs

Lou Rhodes and the Dodge Circuit battery pack

I've heard of carrying extra batteries for a laptop but this is a bit ridiculous. Actually, that's the president of Chrysler electric vehicle ENVI division Lou Rhodes with his laptop sitting on top of the battery pack case for the Dodge Circuit. When I spoke with Rhodes and Doug Quigley a couple of weeks ago they promised that Chrysler would make several announcements regarding its electric vehicle program before Earth Day (April 22). The first of those came a few weeks ago with the revelation that A123 Systems would be the lead supplier for the first production program coming in 2010.

At the New York Auto Show, Rhodes reaffirmed that more announcements were coming within the next two weeks but declined to elaborate further. Unfortunately, the Chrysler display gave no hints because four different battery packs were on display including the Chrysler Town and Country and 200C, as well the Jeep Wrangler. The latter two have a T-shaped configuration similar to the Chevy Volt pack while the minivan pack is a flat rectangular layout that fits nicely under the floor of the people carrier.

Quick Drive: 2010 Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid, two-mode goes German

Click above for a high res gallery of the Mercedes-Benz ML450 hybrid

An hour after Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new ML450 hybrid at the New York Auto Show, we got to take our first quick drive in the first German version of a two-mode hybrid. Mercedes-Benz has been collaborating with General Motors, Chrysler and BMW for the last four years to develop the two-mode hybrid system for applications smaller than the buses that GM originally designed it for. GM has now installed the system across the board on all its GMT900 full size trucks and SUVs and Chrysler briefly offered it on the Durango and Aspen before production of those vehicles ended at the end of 2008. In 2010, Dodge will add the system to the Ram pickup trucks.

Mercedes-Benz will be building its own version of the two-mode hybrid transmission at a plant in Germany. Those transmissions will also be supplied to BMW for the X6 hybrid when that debuts. Read on for our first on the road impressions of the ML450.

New York 2009: Chrysler's new flex-fuel V6 debuts in 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

When Chrysler revealed the new Jeep Grand Cherokee this week in New York, it marked the first public appearance of the company's new V6 engine family. What had previously been referred to as the Phoenix is now officially dubbed the Pentastar V6. Over the next couple of years, variants of this engine will supplant all current 6 cylinder engines in Chrysler's lineup. Like its predecessors, the Pentastar has a 60 degree block angle but manufacturing process has been changed to high pressure diecasting. The initial 3.6-liter version has dual overhead camshafts with variable cam phasing.

The engines are designed to be lighter and more efficient than the units they replace. The first 3.6-liter is claimed to use eight percent less fuel than before, even with the port fuel injection it will have at launch. In the past, Chrysler has said these engines will also have direct injection which will probably appear on later variants. All of the Pentastar V6s will have flex fuel capability from launch.

New York Preview: Mitsubishi to add "idle neutral logic" to Outlander

Next week in New York, Mitsubishi will reveal a new version of its Outlander crossover. The Outlander GT Prototype includes a new feature dubbed Idle Neutral Logic. According to Mitsubishi, this system shifts the transmission into neutral when the vehicle comes to a stop. While this system falls short of even an automatic stop start system, it is purported to save some fuel when the vehicle is sitting at rest. Going into neutral would reduce the load on the engine when idling but it's still using fuel. The reduction in fuel consumption seems like it would be minimal under most conditions, although Mitsubishi was probably able to implement it only with a software change and no hardware.

GM and Segway working on new balancing 2-wheeler?

Click above for a high-res gallery of the GM/Segway Project P.U.M.A.

Please hold a moment while we check our calendars. Nope, it's definitely not April 1st. That must mean the stories circulating the internet tonight of a GM tie-up with Segway must be true. The Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility Project (P.U.M.A. for short) will reportedly seek to develop a self-balancing 2-wheeled vehicle that's capable of reaching speeds of 25 miles per hour, well above the Segway's 12 mph top speed.

Instead of the more common single track of a motorcycle, this electric vehicle will borrow the side-by-side arrangement popularized on the original Segway Personal Transporter. A lithium battery will store enough charge to allow the vehicle to travel for up to 25 miles on a single charge. Another interesting feature would be the ability for each machine to communicate with vehicles around it, avoiding accidents and regulating the flow of traffic.

Cost isn't yet set, but initial projections would place the total cost of ownership for the two-passenger autonomous vehicle at about a quarter of the price of a traditional automobile. The P.U.M.A. project will make its official debut at the New York Auto Show this week. Click past the break for the press release.

Tesla Model S To Appear on Late Show with David Letterman

SAN CARLOS, California — The Tesla Model S will make a high-profile appearance on the CBS Late Show with David Letterman on Wednesday night, April 29, according to the California automaker and the talk show's guest list.

"It will likely be the first fully drivable car to appear on Late Show with David Letterman," according to a statement by Elon Musk, Tesla Motors chairman, product architect and CEO. "I'll be on the show along with the car, and I am looking forward to a lively conversation with Dave, a fellow sports-car aficionado and Tesla fan."

Tesla noted that internal-combustion-engine cars are prohibited from the talk show set due to environmental regulations.

The appearance by the electric automaker on the popular talk show is yet another indication of how the company is carefully steering its products into the popular culture. Model S deliveries are slated to begin in 2012.

Letterman frequently centers his monologue and Top Ten List around cars. On January 16, he took aim at Detroit automakers during the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, saying: "The auto companies are saying they've got new products, new attitudes and they're starting a new chapter. Yeah, Chapter 11."

Innovations at the Auto Show

From April 10 to April 29, the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City hosted the metropolitan area’s largest annual convention, The New York International Auto Show. Over one million people attended the public exhibition this year, which featured the latest concepts and production models from automobile manufacturers from all over the world. The NY auto show is one of the largest annual auto shows in the world.

Although reports have claimed that this year’s auto shows have been toned down from those of years past, due to the fiscal crisis affecting automobile makers around the world, the event wowed attendees with attractions such as a life-size model of the “Transformers” character Bumblebee, and many consumer-oriented promotions such as $50 gift cards for signing up for test drives at local dealerships. The event also allowed attendees to sit in most floor models; a fan favorite since it allows them to take photographs in their dream cars.

In addition to the expected showings of luxury cars such as Rolls Royce, Lamborghini and Bentley models, the auto show featured numerous concept cars which showed where the future of the automotive industry is headed.

Nearly all of the concept cars unveiled boasted hybrid or electric engines — some even included organic fuels, like ethanol. Other new concepts included mini cameras replacing side view and rear view mirrors and the implementation of more technologically advanced computer systems, like Microsoft’s Sync systems, in Ford vehicles.

Autonet Mobile was another innovation that made its way into many of the models shown. Autonet Mobile is a wireless Internet router that sends out a Wi-Fi signal from the car that allows its passengers to access the Internet from any remote location. The technology works on 3G cell-phones and is priced from $29 to $59 a month, depending on usage.

NY Auto Show: Chevrolet Corvette GT1 Championship Edition up close

Just over a month ago, General Motors treated us to a few studio shots of the Chevrolet Corvette GT1 Championship Edition, and most of us were left salivating. Now we are able to get up close and personal with the car as GM had it on show at the NY Auto Show yesterday.

The Chevrolet Corvette GT1 Championship Edition package has been built from the standard 4LT coupe or convertible, and is a tribute package to celebrate the C6.R’s racing successes. The first thing that hits you is the graphics package, this has been influenced by the racecar’s livery, this can be clearly seen by the including the skull “Jake” logo and driver flags.

Autoblog have noticed a fault with the Chevrolet Corvette GT1 Championship Edition, it does not have the same drivetrain as the King Corvette. The ebony interior along with the yellow stitching certainly goes well with the GT1 embroidery adorning the instrument panel, seats, armrest and center console.

Chevrolet will build just 600 units, so you will have to be quick to get your hands on one.

The twin turbo diesel motor offers 600Nm of torque and 245hp – enough to shift the Disco from 0 to 60 in nine seconds. Compared to the existing 2.7-litre that will remain available, the CO2 emissions have been reduced. Land Rover says it can return over 30mpg.

The 2010 Discovery 4 also gets improved suspension, steering, larger brakes and comes with enhanced versions of the Terrain Response and Hill Descent Control systems.

As you would expect, there are also changes to the styling and interior.

There is extensive use of LEDs and the aerodynamics have also been improved. You can have it rolling on twin seven-spoke 19in and even 10-spoke 20in rims.

The Discovery 4, together with the 2010 Range Rover Sport, will be available from this September.

Z-Car, the Max Headroom Edition

Is it real? Yes, and no surprise there. With the coupe making its debut about a year ago, the roadster’s arrival was inevitable.

What they said: “The new 370Z Roadster lives in the same sweet spot of performance, style and value that the Z Coupe does,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager of Nissan division. “Open-air driving just begs for open roads and the new 370Z convertible is the perfect companion.”

What they didn’t say: The Roadster seems to have put on a few pounds. Quite a lot of structural reinforcement was needed to achieve the necessary chassis stability and body rigidity. The hood, door panels and trunk lid are aluminum to help offset some of that bulk.

What makes it tick? The same 332-horsepower 3.7-liter V-6 in the coupe, mated to a 7-speed automatic or a SynchroRev Match 6-speed manual. The Roadster gets 25 m.p.g. on the highway, a slight drop from the 26 m.p.g. coupe.

How much, how soon? No pricing yet, but convertibles usually carry a premium of about $6,000 above the coupes, which now start at $30,000. It’ll be at dealers in time for fall-color drives.

How’s it look? A topless Z? The premise sounds tantalizing. But a soft top is hard to execute without spoiling the coupe’s synergistic shape. This version does a better job than previous iterations of the Z convertible. To be safe, stylingwise, just leave the top down.

Chrysler in cost-cut union deal

Dodge Ram trucks sit parked outside a Chrysler factory in Fenton, Missouri.
Chrysler is one of the three troubled US carmakers

Chrysler has reached an outline cost-cutting deal with its main US union as it continues efforts to restructure the business before a key deadline.

The US government has told the carmaker it will be given a further $6bn (£4bn) of vital state loans if the restructuring is completed by 30 April.

Without the extra funds Chrysler may have to enter bankruptcy protection.

The government is also demanding that Chrysler refinances its debts and secures an alliance with Italy's Fiat.

Falling sales

Chrysler wants staff to accept pay cuts and shorter working hours.

While the United Auto Workers union has accepted a deal in principle, its 26,800 members at Chrysler still have to formally vote on the proposal, the exact details of which have not been released.

Chrysler secured a $4bn loan from the US government in January, and has since gained $500m more.

Fellow Big Three US car firm General Motors (GM) has also received multi-billion government loans. While Ford has yet to require any money, the government has agreed to give it financial support, should it be needed.

Chrysler, GM and Ford have all seen sales slump in their home market as the recession has intensified.

NY Auto Show: GMC Terrain the first new model to break cover

Gmc-terrain-500

The New York International Auto Show, which holds its press preview this week and opens to the public this weekend, is the last major domestic auto show of the season for manufacturers to show off their new products until the Los Angeles show rolls around again in December. Like the shows in Los Angeles, Detroit and Chicago, the New York show is lighter than usual on new products, not surprising given the chilling effect of the economy.

That said, there are some new models that will debut in New York this week, including the Acura ZDX luxury crossover, the drop-top version of the Nissan 370Z, a hot-rod model of the BMW X6, the Porsche 911 GT3, a tweaked 2010 Subaru Legacy and a startlingly redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Of the handful of brand-new products, though, first out of the box -- and thus guaranteeing it some attention -- is the 2010 GMC Terrain, a five-passenger SUV that should slot in nicely beneath the Envoy. Based on the much-massaged platform that will be used for the Chevrolet Equinox, the Terrain will be offered with a 2.4-liter, 182-horsepower four-cylinder, or a 3.0-liter, 264-horse V-6. As the photo shows, it sports the huge GMC trademark grille and a rather angular profile, but has some undeniable presence. Expect it to be priced slightly above the Equinox, likely reaching the upper-$30,000 range with all the bells and whistles.

Stay tuned for more coverage from the Big Apple, even it it isn't quite as Big as it used to be.

General Motors, Chrysler and Ford's Revolutionary Cars and Failures

Nothing says cool, hip and exciting like a Ford.

Well, maybe not. But the U.S. carmaker is trying to change its image as it launches a new marketing campaign for a fuel-efficient, small car it hopes will help pull it out of a slump.

Ford Fiesta
Ford has picked 100 everyday Americans who will test drive and live with the new Fiesta, a compact car aimed at competing with those made by Toyota and Honda.

Ford has picked 100 everyday Americans who will test drive and live with the new Fiesta, a compact car aimed at competing with those made by Toyota and Honda. The 100 "young trendsetters," as Ford calls them, will share their opinions on all kinds of topics through social media outlets ranging from Facebook to Twitter to YouTube.

The "agents" applied for the opportunity online, posting short videos on YouTube explaining why they would be the best representative agents for the "Fiesta movement." More than 640,000 people have viewed the applications on YouTube.

Ford, like its counterparts in Detroit, hopes that one car will help save the struggling automaker. But unlike General Motors, which is putting its energy and brand behind an electric car, Ford is hoping that a small, compact will be hip enough to revive its image.

The Best Cars for Your Money

Amid the dire news for America's car companies comes a ray of light for beleaguered General Motors. An annual value study recently released by Vincentric, an auto-industry analysis firm in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., gives 10 GM models top ratings. Only one model from fellow-sufferer Chrysler, the Jeep Compass, made the cut. Ford, which has yet to require government funding to help maintain its viability, had three models that earned top billing.

Best Cars for the money
The 2009 Toyota Prius and 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid are among the autos that made the grade in a recent study on the best values in the country.

Among GM's winners are several models coming to define the Detroit-based company: hybrids and trucks. GM's segment toppers include the Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Malibu hybrids and the GMC Sierra 3500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 2500 pickups.

Fiat Seeks Majority Stake in Opel

Fiat is soon expected to take over General Motors' European operations. Information obtained by SPIEGEL from sources familiar with the negotiations say that Fiat will sign a letter of intent on Tuesday. Afterwards, the Italian carmaker would obtain a majority stake in the troubled German auto manufacturer Opel.

GM subsidiary Opel is also involved in promising negotiations with autoparts supplier Magna. Opel management and workers would likely greet an investment by Magna because the international parts and components company has a strong reputation in research and development and could complement the German automaker. But executives in Detroit and officials in Germany's Economics Ministry appear to be more interested in a hastier solution with Fiat.

AP source: Chrysler lenders make counteroffer

NEW YORK (AP) — A person familiar with the matter says Chrysler's lenders have delivered another counteroffer to the Treasury Department as the two sides continue to haggle over Chrysler's debt.

The offer was delivered Friday, but the terms were not immediately available. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the negotiations are private.

Earlier this week, the Treasury Department asked the lenders to forgive $5.4 billion of the $6.9 billion in debt in exchange for a 5 percent stake in the company. The lenders had been seeking nearly a 40 percent stake to forgive just $2.5 billion.

Besides cutting labor costs and slashing debt, Chrysler must finalize a partnership with Italian automaker Fiat by the end of the month, or the Auburn Hills, Mich., automaker faces bankruptcy.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

NEW YORK (AP) — With Chrysler LLC appearing increasingly likely to seek bankruptcy protection, members of Congress are calling for an orderly process that saves the company from liquidation.

"My hope is that it's not a liquidation," Sen. Chris Dodd, chairman of the Banking Committee, said Friday morning on the "Early Show" on CBS, "but what they call a debtor-in-possession, sort of Chapter 11 filing, which would allow for the reorganization of these companies."

Published reports Thursday said Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler was preparing a bankruptcy filing, which could come as early as next week. Such a bankruptcy would protect the pensions and retiree health care benefits of United Auto Workers union members, The New York Times reported.

One possibility is that a bankruptcy would allow the company to rid itself of unwanted liabilities. That would allow the Italian automaker Fiat SpA — which has been in talks to acquire a stake in Chrysler — to select which operations it wants, according to The Wall Street Journal.

"As we move forward in this process, we believe it's important to keep all options open," Chrysler said in a statement. "Chrysler will continue to work through the end of the month, based on the direction given by the Presidential Auto Task Force, to secure the support of the necessary stakeholders and reach a successful conclusion that the Administration and U.S. Treasury deems appropriate."

Messages seeking comment were left with the UAW and the Treasury Department.

Chrysler has been surviving on $4 billion in government aid since the beginning of the year and is six days away from a government-imposed restructuring deadline. The Obama administration has promised another $6 billion to the carmaker if it can arrange a tie-up with Fiat and extract deeper concessions from stakeholders, but that outcome appears increasingly remote.

A major sticking point involves a group of banks and hedge funds that hold about $6.9 billion in secured Chrysler debt. They are negotiating with the Treasury Department over a possible debt-for-equity exchange involving a stake in a Chrysler-Fiat alliance. Most recently, the Treasury has asked the debtholders to forgive $5.4 billion and take a 5 percent stake in the alliance, which is far from the lenders' latest offer.

Chrysler would file for bankruptcy even if it reaches an agreement with its lenders and Fiat, but if the deals fall through, the company would begin the process of liquidation, the Journal reported, citing several people familiar with the matter.

"I wish we had different results, but the realities are what they are," said Dodd, D-Conn. "This may be the best option, even though we would have preferred a different one."

"I hope this is not a liquidation — I think that would be the wrong step — but rather one that allows for reorganization," he said.

Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said late Thursday she continued to oppose bankruptcy for Chrysler.

"With Chrysler, we want to see Chrysler/Fiat come together. We want to see GM be able to make it on their own," Stabenow said on "The Ed Show" on MSNBC.

She added that banks that have received government aid should "be willing to stand up."

"I wrote another letter today to them, saying they need to step up and do their part to make sure these companies can be strong," she said.

Jaguar’s Scalded Cat

IS IT REAL? The high-performance edition of the new XF sedan reaches dealerships in April.

WHAT THEY SAID As an Oasis song boomed through Jaguar’s oversized display area, the company showed a slick, Michael Bay-style video of racer Paul Gentilozzi setting a new Jaguar speed record in a modified XF-R at the Bonneville Salt Flats: 225.675 mph, besting the XJ 220 supercar of the ‘90s.

WHAT THEY DIDN’T SAY Ian Callum, Jaguar’s chief designer, said it’s taken 10 years to modernize the Jaguar lineup. “The journey is about getting Jaguar back to making fast, beautiful, modern cars, as they were in the ‘50s and ‘60s.” Mr. Callum said he’s been personally reassured by executives of Tata — the Indian company that bought Jaguar from Ford — that Jaguar will receive the investment it needs to keep its plans on course.

WHAT MAKES IT TICK? An all-new 5-liter, supercharged V-8 with 510 horsepower, good for a 4.7-second sprint to 60 miles an hour. (The new 2010 XK-R sports car gets the same powerplant). A new, stiffer computer-controlled suspension and rear differential, enormous brakes and deep-bolstered sport seats are part of the package.

HOW MUCH, HOW SOON? The supercharged, 420-horsepower XF costs roughly $60,000 well-equipped, so figure at least another $10,000 for this amped-up model when it’s sold this spring.

HOW’S IT LOOK? Subtly beefed-up compared to the standard XF, including a redone front bumper and four exhaust outlets. The intake louvers in the bonnet — that’s “hood” to us Yanks — and the big-and-tall 20-inch wheels are nice touches.

Dream Cars Meet Harsh Reality

WHEN times get tough, auto designers get wild. Or at least they used to.

During previous economic downturns, either for the nation at large or for individual companies, flaunting exotic concept cars at auto shows has been a way for automakers to show defiance in the face of adversity and to assert hope for the future. Bold dream cars are visual pep talks, helping to build morale.

But this year, dark economic clouds seem to have cast a shadow even over the designers displaying their ideas at the Detroit auto show. Concept cars are expensive to build and budgets are tight. Furthermore, automakers gathered here last week under the stern eye of the government — and a public that has put its own money on the line to help them. So no company, and certainly not the hometown teams seeking a helping hand from taxpayers, wanted to be perceived as wasting money on show-biz glitz or sci-fi fantasy.

“We now have a special bond with the American public,” said James E. Press, vice chairman of Chrysler, as he presented his company’s concept cars. Since Chrysler has received some federal money and is hoping for more, it surprised no one that the smallest of the Detroit Three, which in previous years staged elaborate theatrics at the show — crashing Jeeps through windows and herding cattle through the streets — kept its introductions somber and low-key.

The concept cars this year were mostly versions of production models that will be in salesrooms in a couple of years — if their companies survive.

“You see fewer blue-sky concepts this year,” said Bryan Nesbitt, General Motors’ vice president for North American design. “You can no longer just throw a wild concept out there. You have to have a story.”

A concept that lacks a context is simply confusing. For instance, in 2004 Chrysler showed the ME Four-Twelve, a midengine supercar with a V-12 engine. Though it excited horsepower-hungry showgoers, it had no place in the company’s business plan and didn’t mesh with the image that the Chrysler brand was trying to project.

Mazda has drawn attention in recent years for some of the most provocative concept cars, but it did not display any concepts at all this year. Laurens van den Acker, general manager of Mazda’s design division, said that was because the company was now busy applying to production cars the themes it had developed in design studies.

Despite the auto industry’s current troubles — dark humor at the show included puns about Kar-trina, Carmageddon and Carpocalypse Now — the Detroit Three may now have their best designs in years. There is more conviction and identity in the lines of cars from G.M., Ford and Chrysler.

Hybrid Superstar Shines Brighter

Toyota says the new car completed the government‘s test cycle with an economy rating of 51 m.p.g. in city driving and 48 m.p.g. on the highway. Combined mileage came out at an industry-leading 50 m.p.g. In much of the nation these days, you can fill the Prius’s 11.9-gallon tank for less than $20.

But get this: in my road testing of the new Prius, I managed 69 m.p.g. That happened on a 34-mile route of mostly stop-and-go driving, at an average speed of 27 m.p.h. A journalist who drove the same route averaged even better — 74 m.p.g. — although he admitted to driving so far below the speed limit on public roads that he considered himself lucky to have survived.

Will you, the prospective Prius buyer, have any chance of matching those numbers, at least while observing all traffic laws?

With practice, yes, but you will probably have to alter your driving style. My best mileage came when my foot moved on and off the accelerator like a teenager on the first day of driver’s ed.

Earlier, Akihiko Otsuka, the Prius’s chief engineer, had claimed to average 62.9 m.p.g. on the same route, and issued a challenge to top that. When I and my fellow auto writer crushed it, he asked what technique we had used. “It seems to respond well to pulse-and-glide,” I said.

He grinned and nodded.

Pulse-and-glide is the technique that I recently used to achieve 65 m.p.g. in another new hybrid, the 2010 Honda Insight. Basically, it consists of goosing the gas pedal for about 10 seconds to bring up the speed and torque efficiency of the gasoline engine, then gliding with your foot off the accelerator for a few seconds to bring in maximum benefit from the electric motors. You can monitor the effect this style is having by watching the “instantaneous fuel consumption meter” and the new “hybrid system indicator” graph on the information-laden dashboard display.

The previous-generation Prius did not respond as well to this herky-jerky driving style, but the new car certainly does. My co-driver for this exercise, Rick Kranz of Automotive News, drove a steady, conservative speed on the route and averaged 56 m.p.g.

“Now try doing it with pulse-and-glide,” I suggested.

His average immediately jumped to 65 m.p.g. “It works,” he agreed. “But it’s a good way to make everyone carsick.”

The Prius now offers three performance modes that the driver can select: EV for or electric-only, ECO for economy and POWER for, well, you get it.

In EV mode it is possible to travel up to a mile — at 24 m.p.h. or less —on battery power alone. But that discharges the battery, and it takes 20 to 30 miles of subsequent driving to recharge it.

ECO moderates a driver’s more erratic tendencies. It can be left on all the time, as it was for my 69 m.p.g. run.

The POWER setting takes its toll on mileage, but enables runs from 0 to 60 m.p.h. in 9.8 seconds. That will not induce whiplash, but it is four-tenths of a second quicker than the 2009 Prius.

TESTED 2009 Audi A6 3.0T quattro

WHAT IS IT? All-wheel-drive luxury sedan with Audi’s newest engine.

HOW MUCH? $50,925 base; $56,025 as tested with the $5,100 Prestige package (including navigation system, premium Bose sound system, LED daytime running lights and rear-view camera).

WHAT’S UNDER THE HOOD? A 3-liter V-6 with a supercharger and direct fuel injection, connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

WHY’S IT IMPORTANT? With this new 6-cylinder engine, Audi’s strategy is to deliver both V-8-caliber performance and reasonable fuel economy.

IS IT THIRSTY? The federal fuel economy rating is 18 miles a gallon in town, 26 on the highway.

BOTH turbochargers and superchargers exist to shove more air and fuel into an engine than is possible by natural aspiration alone. Turbochargers use exhaust gases to spin a compressor, while superchargers are driven directly off the motor.

Each technology has its pros and cons, but in the matter of image it’s no contest. The turbocharger is the upscale, elegant solution, the forced-induction method of choice for the Bugatti Veyron, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG and the hairiest Porsche 911s. The supercharger is something that sticks up out of the hood of a primer-gray Monte Carlo, a whining, fuel-sucking horsepower shortcut; it’s an option installed in the service bay at Scion dealerships. The supercharger gets the job done, but in sports terms it’s what you might call winning ugly.

Audi is a turbocharger kind of company, using turbos on both of its small motors (like the excellent 2-liter 4-cylinder in the A3 and A4) and its wildest ones (the twin-turbo V-10 in the European-market RS6). But Audi’s newest V-6, the 3-liter in the A6 sedan, breaks with the program. It is supercharged, just like the engines in the Mustang GT500 or the late Buick Park Avenue Ultra.

If you think Audi isn’t slightly embarrassed by this, consider that the trunk badge says “3.0T,” with the “T” implying “turbo.” The first stage of supercharger installation seems to be denial.

The new V-6 combines supercharging with direct fuel injection to make 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. At a stroke, it renders the V-8 version of the A6 essentially pointless, as the V-6 model is only a 0.1 second slower to 60 miles an hour (5.9 seconds vs. 5.8) while returning fuel economy that is better by a few miles a gallon. And the price is $5,750 less.

Superchargers provide instant response, thanks to their direct mechanical connection to the engine, and the A6 is no exception. Peak torque arrives at only 2,500 r.p.m., which means the car can be driven in a relaxed manner while making rapid progress. And two of the annoyances of supercharged motors — the annoying high-pitched whine of the compressor and hard-to-modulate power delivery — are vanquished. If you didn’t know better, you’d think this was a refined but uncommonly strong naturally aspirated V-6.

I wonder if direct injection is the silver bullet for supercharged refinement, because the Jaguar XFR’s supercharged direct-injected V-8 is also sweet — no shrieking whine, just a smooth pull of power.

The new motor is particularly suited to the A6, a car that doesn’t try to set new lap records at the Nürburgring Nordschleife but exudes an air of subtle superiority.

The two-tone interior of my test car was rendered in a color scheme called amaretto and black that looks delicious enough to make you crave a pack of Rolo chocolates. The headlamps are underlined by white LED running lights that look menacing and aren’t yet a beaten-to-death styling trope. And the optional Bose sound system is thunderous, though music freaks will note that it lacks the seat-mounted tweeters of Bose systems in the Infiniti M35 and Cadillac STS.

The A6, especially with the innocuous standard 18-inch wheels, does not grandstand. It’s the kind of car you might be able to drive past a trooper at triple-digit speeds without being noticed.

The A6’s aesthetic has always been one of restrained decadence, and the new V-6 is consistent with that approach. Sure, it’s not quite as fast as the V-8, but if moderation and social responsibility still bring 0-60 sprints in less than six seconds, I can live with that.

It Brakes for Fire Hydrants

Is it real? Is Ruffy a good boy? Is he a good boy? Yes, Ruffy is a good boy. Yes he is. Yes he is.

What they said: “In an interesting turn of events, cars are now chasing dogs," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda.

What they didn’t say: If you’re the kind of doting pet owner who’ll gladly spend hundreds of dollars on doggie auto gear, you are probably the kind of pet owner who would rather step in poop than confine Leroy the Labradoodle to a dark, distant spot on the cargo floor behind the second-row seat.

What makes it tick (so to speak)? The Dog Friendly Concept is a preview of a dealer-installed option package aimed at free-spending dog owners. As displayed at the Javits Center, this includes a cushioned mesh “dog containment system” for the cargo area; a collapsible entry ramp that stores underneath; a dedicated Fido cooling fan; a spillproof water bowl; a secondary “containment system” for the back seat (to accommodate smaller breeds); special pet restraints; a rubber mat in a dog-bone pattern; and a special collar, leash and dog tag.

How much, how soon? Some version of the Dog Friendly features will be available as a dealer-installed option on the Element EX (2009 or later models) this fall. The price has not been set.

How’s it look? The bone-design floor mat is practical and fun. Firm-fitting second-row seat covers are not only fur- and leak-resistant, they come in a spiffy dog-sniffs-dog pattern. But we’d scratch the paw-print exterior emblems, which take the cuteness factor a bit too far.

Acura Charts Its Own Course With ZDX

Is it real? This so-called prototype is so close to production that its introduction now is an anticlimax. Acura did a good job, though, of keeping its new baby a secret until showtime.

What they said: “The ZDX is truly a luxury performance coupe — plus,” Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales, said. “The emotional coupe styling, coupled with a luxurious and dramatic interior and surprising versatility, allows the ZDX to define its own segment and attract an entirely new customer.”

What they didn’t say: Acura is finally going its own way on styling — good thing too, because Acura styling has been sorely lacking in originality and drama.

What makes it tick? As it rides on an MDX platform and will be manufactured in the same Canadian factory, it is no surprise the ZDX’s power train is from the MDX. Let’s hope the 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V-6, which needs premium fuel, gets better economy than the MDX’s disappointing 15/20 m.p.g.

How much, how soon? In production this summer, at dealers by fall. While the X6 starts around $55,000, the ZDX will undercut that. But nobody is saying yet by how much.

How’s it look? People may call the ZDX Acura’s answer to the BMW X6, but the ZDX was first sketched four years ago. And while BMW’s X6 looks like a stink-bug ready to let loose, the ZDX manages to optimize a similar silhouette in ways less likely to threaten or offend, more likely to impress and seduce.

From Kia, Revenge of the Nerds

Is it real? Yes, but by the time the Koup — Kia’s first coupe — arrives at the import tuner party, Kool & the Gang will have probably wrapped up their last set.

What they said: “On the heel of the introductions of the Soul and Forte sedan, Forte Koup represents the next exciting step in the transformation of Kia design and offers a blend of sporty and emotional appeal,” Michael Sprague, a Kia marketing vice president, said.

What they didn’t say: Someone at Kia must be hoping that kids still have money in this economy. With new vehicles like the funky Soul, the Forte sedan and now the Koup coupe, once-staid Kia is staking much of its business model on appealing to the so-called “youth market.” Risky business.

What makes it tick? Either a 2-liter 4-cylinder with 156 horsepower for EX models, or a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with 173 horsepower for the SX. The EX, which comes with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission, is rated at 25 m.p.g. city and 34 highway. A smidgeon thirstier, the 2.4 gets 23/31 with a 5-speed automatic or 22/32 with a 6-speed manual.

How much, how soon? No prices were announced. Koups will start arriving in showrooms early this summer

How’s it look? Sporty, in the manner of a math major in an argyle sweater vest. It carries just enough styling cues from the Honda Civic to cause double-takes.

When Cool Just Happens

Is it real? Toyota says it is studying whether “urban trend-setters” would accept this three-seater as a member of the Scion family. Awww, it’s so adorable, Madonna would want to adopt one.

What they said: “Scion’s iQ concept turns traditional auto design upside down,” said Jack Hollis, vice president of Scion. “Traditionally, small vehicles have been thought of as being basic. The iQ concept is just the opposite, with its innovative features and iconic urban design, and we believe it fits in well within the Scion brand. Our young, trend-setting buyers are creative and innovative forward thinkers, and we think they will appreciate what iQ has to offer.”

What they didn’t say: The iQ isn’t exactly new; it is already sold in Europe and Japan as a Toyota. But over there, it’s a tiny Plain Jane for commuters on a tight budget. Over here, a tuner car specialist, Five Axis of Huntington Beach, Calif., has royally pimped this ride. Ride on.

What makes it tick? Nothing yet. Overseas, the iQ putt-putts around with a 1-liter 67-horsepower engine — but it gets 65 miles to the gallon A racier 1.3-liter power plant with 99 horsepower gets 54 m.p.g. Americans would probably get something more powerful and less fuel-efficient — and that would be too bad.

How much, how soon? Toyota is coy about whether or not the iQ will, in fact, be added to the Scion lineup. But all doubt will probably be removed by a million visitors to the New York auto show screaming that they want one. Immediately.

How’s it look? As a concept, a cross between a Mini and a Smart, but cooler. The worry is that a production version would be dumbed-down and uglied-up.

Ford beats forecasts

DETROIT–Ford Motor Co. posted a smaller-than-expected first-quarter loss Friday amid the auto sector downturn and said it was on track to at least break even in 2011 and did not expect to seek U.S. government loans.

The company also said it had burned through $3.7 billion of automotive cash in the first quarter, a sharp drop from the second half of last year, and ended March with $21.3 billion in gross cash, sending its shares up nearly 18 per cent in premarket trading.

Ford posted a net loss of $1.43 billion, or 60 cents per share, for the first quarter, compared with net income of $70 million, or 3 cents per share, a year earlier.

The loss from continuing operations and excluding one-time items came to 75 cents per share. Analysts on average expected a loss of $1.23 on that basis, according to Reuters Estimates.

"Our results in the first quarter reflected the extremely difficult business environment and weak demand for autos around the world," Chief Executive Alan Mulally said in a statement.

Still, Chief Financial Officer Lewis Booth called the results encouraging and said the automaker expected the first quarter to have the worst cash burn of the year.

Rather than the quarterly results, investors are more focused on Ford's liquidity, its full-year outlook for U.S. auto industry sales and its ability to navigate the economic downturn. The struggles of rivals General Motors Corp (GM.N) and Chrysler are at the center of Wall Street's attention.

Ford has not sought U.S. government aid, setting it apart from GM and Chrysler, which are operating on $17.4 billion of federal loans and have sought more to stave off bankruptcy.

Ford posted a 2008 net loss of $14.7 billion, a company record, and has reported losses of about $30 billion over the past three years.

Ford shares were up 17.6 per cent at $5.28 in trading before the market opened. They have risen from a 27-year-low of $1.02 in November, when automakers were in the process of appealing for emergency loans.

Chrysler's fate rests with debtors as clock ticks

NEW YORK (AP) — With a government deadline just seven days away, Chrysler LLC is running out of time to work out deals with debtholders, its unions and a foreign partner.

A life outside of bankruptcy appears to hinge on whether Chrysler and the U.S. government can get the company's lenders to forgive a large portion of the company's debt in exchange for stock. But both sides are far apart.

"I've said this is the equivalent of a 70-yard field goal," Michael Robinet, vice president of global vehicle forecasts at CSM Worldwide, said of Chrysler meeting all its obligations in the next seven days.

Analysts have said all other negotiations hang on that deal. However, The New York Times reported Thursday that the Treasury Department is preparing a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing for Chrysler, under which the pensions and retiree health care benefits of the United Auto Workers union would be protected. The company would pursue a deal with Italian automaker Fiat SpA while under bankruptcy protection. The lender issue remains unresolved, according to the newspaper.

UAW representatives could not be reached for comment late Thursday.

Chrysler spokeswoman Shawn Morgan said in an e-mail that "it's important to keep all options open.

"Chrysler will continue to work through the end of the month, based on the direction given by the Presidential auto task force, to secure the support of the necessary stakeholders and reach a successful conclusion that the administration and U.S. Treasury deems appropriate," Morgan said.

Chrysler's secured lenders consist of large and small banks and hedge funds that have poured about $6.9 billion into the Auburn Hills, Mich., company. These lenders — about 45 — would be first in line to get paid if the company's assets were liquidated.

Stocks point higher after durable goods report

NEW YORK (AP) — Stock futures are higher as orders for big-ticket manufactured items fall less than expected in March.

The Commerce Department said Friday that orders for durable goods dropped by 0.8 percent last month, less than the 1.5 percent decline that economists had been expecting.

The report is fanning hopes that a slide in manufacturing is starting to bottom out.

Stock futures have been higher after Ford Motor Co. posted better-than-expected results for the first three months of the year.

Dow Jones industrial average futures are up 21 at 7,936. Standard & Poor's 500 index futures are up 5.80 at 854.50, while Nasdaq 100 index futures are up 14.00 at 1,356.00.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stock futures pointed to a moderately higher open Friday after Ford Motor Co. posted better-than-expected results for the first three months of the year.

Futures had been essentially flat early Friday ahead of details on how the government is evaluating the health of the nation's largest banks.

Ford's report buoyed hopes for the overall economy as the nation's second-largest automaker reported that it spent $3.7 billion more than it brought in during the quarter. That amount is far less than the $7.2 billion the company burned through in the fourth quarter. The stock jumped 17 percent to $5.25 a share in electronic trading.

The welcome news from Ford comes as investors wait for details on the methodology for the "stress tests" that regulators have given to 19 of the largest U.S. financial institutions. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is expected to outline the Obama administration's efforts during meetings Friday with finance ministers from the Group of Seven nations, a department official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak on the record.

Ford May Avoid Bailout Even After First-Quarter Loss

April 23 (Bloomberg) -- Ford Motor Co., the only major U.S. automaker surviving without federal aid, has more than doubled in the past seven weeks even as it prepares to announce its largest first-quarter loss in 17 years.

The company may say tomorrow it lost $3.2 billion, or $1.33 a share, the average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Bloomberg about the quarter. Investors pushed Ford up to $4.49 today in New York Stock Exchange composite trading from $1.87 on March 4 on expectations it will be a strong survivor when the U.S. industry emerges from the worst sales in 27 years.

“Ford is a completely different animal” than General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, said Jeffrey Spotts, a New York- based portfolio manager at the $250 million Prophecy Fund which has been accumulating Ford shares since February. “Consumers don’t want to buy a car from a company that took money from the government or that might go bankrupt.”

The Dearborn, Michigan-based company benefits from growing sentiment on Wall Street that it will seek neither a bailout nor bankruptcy protection. Ford’s cost reductions will let it avoid federal aid in a U.S. market that remains at an annual sales rate of about 9 million vehicles, a pace not seen since 1981, Ford Chief Financial Officer Lewis Booth said last month.

A Ford spokesman, Bill Collins, declined to comment on first-quarter results.

GM Chief Executive Officer Fritz Henderson said on April 17 the largest U.S. carmaker will seek bankruptcy protection unless it can restructure debt out of court by June 1. GM is operating on $13.4 billion in federal loans.

Positive Reports

Chrysler, operating on $4 billion in government aid, has until May 1 to form an alliance with Italy’s Fiat SpA or it will be cut off from further federal assistance. Without that support, the third-largest U.S. automaker, will likely be liquidated in bankruptcy, CEO Bob Nardelli has said.

Analysts have issued positive reports on Ford since meeting with Booth, including a buy recommendation on April 21 from Goldman Sachs. They cited a March 9 agreement with the United Auto Workers union that slashed Ford’s annual labor costs by $500 million and a debt restructuring completed April 3 that cut borrowings 38 percent.

“Unlike GM, we do not foresee bankruptcy at Ford, which we believe has sufficient liquidity to make it through to 2010 without additional funding,” Goldman analyst Patrick Archambault wrote. “With GM and Chrysler likely to file for bankruptcy in coming weeks, in our view, we think the stage is set for a sea change in the structure of the U.S. auto industry.”

Executive Chairman Bill Ford, great-grandson of company founder Henry Ford, acknowledged that risk at a conference in California on April 20. He said his company is intent on remaining self-sufficient.

“I kind of like where we are, even if ultimately there are some disadvantages,” Ford said. “The advantage of being an independent company, able to react quickly and chart your own future -- there’s great benefit to that.”

Dodge Ram Hemi Hybrid On Schedule for Release in 2010

Dodge's full size pickup truck the Ram is about to enter the hybrid game.

The Ram is scheduled for release in 2010 and appears to be coming along as spy shots have now been released. The 2 mode hybrid powertrain is a joint venture between many companies including Chrysler, BMW, General Motors, and Mercedes Benz.

In the 2010 Ram, the expected engine is a 2 mode hybrid paired with a 5.7 liter HEMI V8. The engine will include cylinder deactivation and an automatic transmission. On the electric side, power will come from a 60kW electric motor. The hybrid powertrain is similar in design to the GM full size twin pickup hybrids the Sierra and the Silverado.

The Ram powertrain should provide the ability to move under full electric power at low speeds. No word is available on batteries used in the 2010 Ram at this point.

More information will be available as the release draws near sometimes in 2010.

Concepts, hybrids shine at N.Y. auto show

Attendance by autojournalists may have been down at this year's New York International Auto Show, what with travel cutbacks and layoffs, but the mood of the automakers here was decidedly more hopeful than it was in Detroit.

Despite an industry-wide average sales drop-off of 15 per cent, some automakers posted record sales last year.

Subaru Canada was one of those lucky few. The automaker recorded its best sales ever in 2008, with a total of 19,892 units sold, and it set a new record this March. Total vehicle sales were up 14.6 per cent over the 1,639 vehicles sold during March of last year.

Subaru unveiled its all-new 2010 Legacy sedan here. The automaker also took the wraps off its new 2010 Outback, which is available with two engines, several trims -- PZEV, 2.5i Sport and 3.6R -- and a variety of packages.

The PZEV and 2.5i models are powered by a revised 2.5-litre, four-cylinder Subaru boxer engine and are mated to a new six-speed manual transmission or the optional new Lineartronic CVT. The CVT is also equipped with a six-speed manual mode and steering wheel paddle shifters.

The 2.5L engine delivers 170 horsepower at 5,600 r.p.m. and 170 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 r.p.m.

The new 3.6L boxer six-cylinder engine produces 256 h.p. and 247 lb.-ft. of peak torque, and it uses regular rather than premium fuel.

The 2010 Outback provides quicker acceleration and lower fuel consumption than its predecessor, despite being larger and roomier, says Subaru. It has a wider track, ground clearance has been increased to 220 millimetres and interior volume is up by almost eight per cent, even though the vehicle is shorter than its predecessor.

Mercedes-Benz Canada also had a record sales year in 2008, with sales surpassing the 20,000-unit mark in Canada for the first time in the automaker's history.

A record-breaking total of 2,393 Mercedes-Benz and Smart vehicles were sold in March, which represents the best ever combined March sales for Mercedes-Benz and Smart and a 16.4-per-cent improvement over March of 2008.

Mercedes unveiled its sexy new E-Class Coupe, its new E63 AMG performance sedan and its new ML450 Hybrid.

The E350 Coupe comes with a 3.5L V6 with 268 h.p. and the E550 features Mercedes' 382-h.p. V8.

The E63 AMG gets 518 h.p. and 456 lb.-ft. of torque from its 6.3L V8.

The ML450 Hybrid features a two-mode hybrid system that Mercedes says offers fuel savings of up to 60 per cent. It has a 288-volt battery and an Atkinson-cycle V6 gasoline engine with 275 h.p.

Mercedes says the ML450 can travel on purely electric, purely gasoline or a combination of both powertrains. The ML450 Hybrid has a fuel economy of 11.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 9.8 L/100 km on the highway.

Chrysler may not have had such a great year, but president and vice-chairman Jim Press seemed in good spirits as he arrived on stage in a Fiat 500.

"We're a new, lean restructured company ... and we're making progress," said Press. "We're bubbling over with excitement."

Although Press insisted that he was "not announcing anything," he said Chrysler was pleased U.S. President Barack Obama had endorsed its proposed alliance with Fiat.

Chrysler unveiled its all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which Press promised would be the "most sought-after luxury SUV" on the market.

General Motors unveiled its 2010 GMC Terrain, a crossover SUV that replaces the Pontiac Torrent and GMC Envoy. It will be available with two engines, a new 2.4L direct-injected four-cylinder and a 3.0L DOHC direct-injected V6.

Each engine is teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission. The new Terrain will go on sale this summer.

The cutest vehicle here is Scion's iQ micro-subcompact concept. While comparisons of the less-than-10-foot-long iQ can be made with the tiny Smart for two, the iQ is meaner-looking and has a little more attitude.

Automakers Roll Out Their Best Rides at the 2009 Auto Show

NEW YORK (AP/ 1010 WINS) -- Battered automakers are unveiling greener, hipper cars at the New York International Auto Show that they hope will satisfy scared buyers.
1010 WINS reporter John Montone checked out the most forward-looking and "clean" vehicles from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Ford, and Toyota, to name a few.

PHOTO GALLERY: 2009 Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz is debuting four new vehicles, including a high-performance version of its E-Class sedan and two hybrid models, and Land Rover unveiled a trio of new models. Toyota Motor Corp.'s Scion brand is showcasing a concept based on the Toyota iQ microcar, and Acura is unveiling the ZDX, a sport sedan that Honda Motor Co.'s luxury brand said will go on sale this fall.

General Motors Corp. is showing off the 2010 GMC Terrain compact crossover vehicle.

Ford Motor Co. is rolling out its electric-vehicle ambitions and new models like the Ford Fusion hybrid. The company has developed active park assist which backs the car into a parking spot with the driver keeping their hands off the wheel.

Montone checked out Volvo's collision avoidance system which stops the vehicle without the driver stepping on the brakes.

For those looking to ride in luxury without guzzling gas, Fisker unveiled it's $87,000 green-machine Karma. And for those concerned with fuel efficiency the Volkswagen Bug is the car for you.

The 2009 New York International Auto Show will run April 10 - 19 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

NY International Auto Show 2009

A car show for the common man may suggest merely a collection of family sedans, midlife crisis cars and the ever-ubiquitous hot hatch; however, the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) has more in store for the average visitor. Held at the Jacob Javit's Convention Center in New York City, the show amidst the recession car manufacturers are shelling out little cash to produce new vehicles; if the price of oil were high, but the economy was in good shape, it would be 2007. This would also mean a plethora of fuel-sipping machines, designed with the average Joe in mind, but here and now in April 2009, few efficient concepts are offered at the show. Design studies and concepts aren't uncommon at the NYIAS, but innovative production cars are more typically more common.

This year, the innovation seemed to come from Ford in the form of the 2010 Taurus. The car shown at NYIAS is ready for production and is no different from the European equivalent in terms of fit and finish, although it's not the Mondeo. The build quality is greatly improved from Tauruses of old, but this comes at a price, this family sedan starts at $25,000; the base price for the limited-production and high performance SHO variant is $37,000. At this point, it's in the price range of the BMW 1 and 3 series. One might wonder why an American family sedan is a high point of an auto show containing over 1,000 production and concept cars. Very few companies represented at the NYIAS suggested such an overhaul of not only the brand's image, but its future selling points as well.

For the car-forum-trolling, pimply-faced, 15-year-olds, the show satisfied all needs and desires; bright colors and displays dominated the Scion exhibit, plus Lamborghini, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Koenigsegg, and Spyker were represented. ShamWow was not represented; however, a knock-off vendor managed to shout at those passing through the merch section of the show. In keeping with the theme of mediocrity, GM offered up a natty Cadillac plug-in design exercise, this machine while shiny, offered up little promise for those interested in "green energy." GM satisfied those interested in greenwashing; the presenter touted the Volt, a virtually production-ready concept as having 40 miles of 'completely green range.' Needless to say, the power source defines the range's environmental sustainability: someone using nuclear, coal, natural gas or oil is hardly sustainable. The presenter went on to suggest that the gasoline or ethanol-burning engine is environmentally acceptable because it doesn't power the wheels: it runs a generator, which runs an electric motor to power the wheels. This immediately raises questions regarding energy (heat) lost in friction.

As for the crowds and the overall experience; there was little interest in the SUV and light truck exhibits; the 'cars' were much more popular. The facilities were clean and organization was clear although legitimate dining possibilities were scant inside the building. In all, the experience was not a waste of time and certainly it goes without saying that the poor selection of outstanding vehicles reflects the economy. Then again, this asks the question of 'what is outstanding for a new car?' The fact that it's new implies a warranty and technology for the sake of technology and marketing, but that's another subject.

Porsche Chooses China for Entry Into Sedans

SHANGHAI — Porsche unveiled its entry into the luxury sedan

Auto sales rose 10 percent last month in China to a record, and exceeded sales in the United States for the third month in a row as the world’s largest single-country market. That has prompted automakers from around the world to pay particular attention to the Chinese market, with a range of models to be introduced here.

Subcompacts and very small and simple minivans are the fastest-growing segments of the Chinese market. But China has also emerged as the world’s second-largest market after the United States for a growing number of luxury car brands, and become the focus of energetic marketing by luxury manufacturers.

The global economic slowdown, which trimmed Chinese growth to a still respectable 6.1 percent in the first quarter, has hurt luxury car sales, although less than in many other markets. Luxury car sales fell 8 percent in the first two months of this year compared with the period a year ago, according to the research firm J. D. Power and Associates.

“This year there will be some impact, but when the economy recovers, this segment will also grow,” said Yale Zhang, a Chinese market forecaster in the Shanghai office of CSM Worldwide, a global automotive consulting firm.market here on Sunday night, the eve of the Shanghai auto show. It was the latest confirmation of the importance of the Chinese auto market and the first time that Porsche has entered a new market segment at an auto show outside Europe or North America.

Sport Bikes Get Antilock

IN the decades since antilock brakes first became widely available in cars, the systems have proved to be a huge safety benefit, preventing the skids and loss of steering control that all too often end with crunched fenders and injured passengers.

Antilock systems offer much the same collision avoidance advantages for motorcycles as well as an added benefit: preventing a loss of stability when the front wheel locks, a situation that almost always ends with a bike lying on the pavement.

Antilock brakes have been available on a handful of motorcycles since the 1980s, beginning with BMWs. But high cost, added weight and unspectacular stopping performance kept them from wide acceptance.

A new system developed by Honda, which applies antilock electronics to control front and rear brakes with linked operation, may help change buyers’ attitudes. The eyebrow-raising element here is the models that Honda is offering its Combined ABS feature on: two pure sport machines, the CBR1000RR and the CBR600RR.

Japanese Failed to Bet on the Pony Car

FOREIGN automakers have come to dominate, or at least take a chunk of, every segment of the market that Detroit once ruled. Every segment, that is, except pony cars.

While Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have sold tens of millions of Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers, no Asian rival has gone mano a mano with their own V-8-powered, rear-drive sporty coupes.

On Friday Ford celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Mustang, the first of the small sport coupes that wrapped freedom and rebellion in an all-American bow. Over that time, Japanese manufacturers have largely stuck with more timid 4- and 6-cylinder models, from the Toyota Celica to the Nissan 240SX, that accentuated practicality at the expense of personality. Even long-lived models that delivered respectable performance, like the 4-cylinder Honda Preludes of 1978-2001, had no trace of the daring, danger and aggression that appeal to fans of powerful American muscle cars.

Original Pony, Now Playing Catch-Up

IT’S a lot like 1969 again. The Dodge Challenger, with styling that draws heavily on a sport coupe Chrysler introduced in late 1969, made its return last year. The Chevrolet Camaro, whose shape evokes the popular 1969 model, recently went back into production. Each is a clean and lean interpretation of its ancestor from the muscle-car era.

Meanwhile, Ford’s retro-futuristic Mustang, based on a late 1960s fastback model, has been around since the 2005 model year — and is beginning to look as droopy as a Fu Manchu mustache. So for the 2010 model year, a sartorial segue to a more ripped look, to stay current with the competition, was in order.

None of the period-perfect charm of its predecessor has been lost in the newest edition of Ford’s seminal pony car. But you’d probably need to park a 2009 next to a 2010 to see how truly different they are. The redesign seems to have carved away about half the body fat; what’s left is, appropriately enough, all muscle.

“Muscle goes modern,” Mark Fields, president of Ford’s Americas division, said when he introduced the car in November at the Los Angeles auto show. “This car is a modern legend — with more than nine million of them sold in the last 45 years. We needed to make sure the legend continues to live up to expectations.”

Glamour Dims as Hecklers Hit the Auto Show

Just a year ago, working as a product presenter at an auto show was a pretty straightforward job. You stood next to a vehicle, you called it a marvel of engineering, style and comfort and then you fielded softball questions like, “What does this baby cost?”

But that was before the bailout. Now that the government has helped General Motors and Chrysler stave off bankruptcy with billions of dollars in loans, these companies are finding somewhat hostile crowds at their exhibits. Which leads to scenes like the one on Friday at the New York auto show, where a blond woman in a tight black dress stood on a rotating platform and pitched the sporty Dodge Circuit, one of five electric cars that Chrysler is developing.

Donald Han, an accountant from Queens, sounded unmoved. “Why now?” he asked the woman, rather curtly, once she had finished her patter. “How come you’ve got to nearly go bankrupt before you come out with a car like this?”

Long a glamorous showcase for carmakers, auto shows have lately become a place for buyers and gawkers to vent. Few of the attendees at the Javits Center, where the New York show runs until Sunday, will ever encounter a top executive from G.M. or Chrysler. But all of them get within heckling range of the presenters and for some, that is good enough.
