2009 New York Auto Show: Subaru

Subaru unveiled its Legacy Concept in January at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, and just a few months later, it showed off the 2010 Legacy--as well as the 2010 Outback--at the 2009 New York Auto Show.

2010 Subaru Legacy

The new Legacy will be offered in several different trim levels--2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5GT Premium, 2.5GT Limited, 3.6R, 3.6R Premium, and 3.6R Limited. 2.5 models get a 2.5-liter horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder that makes 170 horsepower in 2.5i models and 265 horsepower in 2.5GT models--thanks to a turbocharger--while 3.6 models get a 256-horsepower horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder. 2.5is offer a choice of a 6-speed manual or a a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), while 2.5GT models come solely with a 6-speed manual. 3.6R models come only with a a 5-speed automatic transmission. All models come with all-wheel drive.

2010 Subaru Outback

It was a bit of surprise when Subaru brought the new version of the Outback on stage in New York. The new wagon gets the 170-horse 2.5 4-cylinder engine in 2.5i models and the 3.6 6-cylinder in 3.6R models. Both models are offered in base, Premium, and Limited trims. 2.5i models have either a 6-speed manual or a CVT, while 3.6 models come only with a 5-speed automatic. Like Legacy, Outback comes standard with all-wheel drive.

The Examiner's Take

Legacy looks like it could give other midsize sedans like Honda Accord and Toyota Camry a run for their money. As for the Outback, the new look should give the popular crossover wagon fresh legs in the showroom.
